Preventative versus Restorative Massage Therapy

massage therapy

Massage therapy has become increasingly popular over the years. The incredible feel of a massage alone can attest to why, but the truth is, massage has innumerable physical benefits as well. Whether you go for relaxation alone or for the physical benefits, it is still positively affecting your overall well-being and is highly recommended.

Massage and spa are one aspect of a natural health approach to taking care of our bodies and even our mental health. Most forms of massage have Eastern roots, and even accompanying treatments such as aromatherapy and all-natural skincare borrow heavily from those roots.

For most, this natural approach to health––steering away from man-made medications and treatments whenever avoidable––is considered the best option. As much as we should appreciate the giant leaps taken in modern medicine, nature will always be the best and purest resource.

There are many different kinds of massage, and they are all beneficial for both restorative and preventative care. The following are examples:

Types of Massage

  • Chair Massage
  • Couple’s Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Himalayan Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage
  • Reflexology Massage
  • Scalp Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Swedish Massage
  • Stone Facial
  • Therapeutic Massage
  • Cupping Therapy
  • Vichy Table Shower
  • Herbal Foot Soak Detox

What do we mean when we say “restorative” and “preventative” care?

Many people only go to have a massage, whatever type of massage they choose, because of a physical problem they are already having and seeking relief from. This is what we would label “restorative,” because they are seeking to be restored back to their former health. By all means, this is a valid reason to receive a massage. As we mentioned, the benefits of massage therapy are endless.

Benefits

Relief of:

  • Muscle Soreness
  • Headaches
  • Backaches
  • Sickness
  • Injury in recovery
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • And more

We are always thrilled to see clients leave feeling relief from pain or tension.

Another kind of massage therapy, however, is preventative massage. In action, this therapy will look almost exactly the same for most of the types of massage listed earlier (one exception being when your massage therapist changes the style or intensity of your massage based on your physical discomfort).

The difference? This reasoning for this kind of massage therapy is in preventing the tension and pain from coming to begin with. Often, those who get massage therapy for preventative reasons come on a regular basis and/or whenever they begin to suspect the symptoms of mental or physical tension.

Lotus 5 Senses Spa is more than happy to work with you whether it is a restorative or preventative massage therapy that you need.

We will always recommend that you seek out massage as preventative care as often as possible. We hate to see our clients struggle with pains and strains that could have been prevented. However, if you come when you are already experiencing physical or mental discomfort, we are here to restore your wellbeing! Book an appointment with us today.
